Sun Devil Learning Labs

Multimedia Video Production

March 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic pushing educational instruction online, the Sun Devil Learning Labs were launched. The first version of the Labs involved live streaming lessons via YouTube, which I helped produce in real-time. In the next version, Teacher Candidates recorded their lessons in advance to be edited and posted online. My role included producing the video in Adobe Premiere and managing the playlist online.

Processes

Software/Tool(s): Adobe Premiere Pro, G Suite, YouTube

  • Development of each SDLL video required successful completion of a 16-step workflow - all done remotely.

As a video producer, I became involved in the process once the Teacher Candidate had uploaded their raw footage to Google Drive for me to download locally.

  • Using Adobe Premiere Pro, I would edit each video. This included basic elements, such as adding the brand-standard intro/outro per video and removing any portions of video where the Teacher Candidate misspoke. I also created short graphics and animations throughout the lesson to make the video more engaging to watch.

  • As the total number of SDLL videos began to grow for my assigned grade level (Kindergarten), I began to manage my respective YouTube playlist. This included ensuring all supplemental documents were correctly listed and that each video description was accurate and up to date.

Seventy-two videos were produced for the on-demand version of SDLL. These covered English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

 Reflection

Work on the Sun Devil Learning Labs is a highlight of my college career. With the pandemic forcing instruction online, Education majors (who would otherwise complete their in-person teaching residencies) were in a difficult position if they wanted to graduate on-time. Being part of such a directly impactful effort was very rewarding.

The most difficult step of this process was the extremely limited timeframe for the details of Sun Devil Learning Labs to be fully organized and planned. This involved meeting with several teams within the Teachers College to ensure that our role, as student workers, were utilized to our pull potential and to make the most impact.

Actively producing our live streams (and eventually working to edit on-demand versions) stood as extremely useful pieces of work experience as well. My work on this project was not only emotionally rewarding for my peers and community, but I gained experience with YouTube/Zoom streaming, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Illustrator. Overall, it was a highly memorable project that I am very proud to been part of.
